How We Make Our Living Succulent Wreaths |
by Kat McCullough One of the many forms of horticultural artistry on display during every A Longwood Christmas is our selection of intricately crafted living wreaths. While the Conservatory is currently closed, this year, we created a living wreath of yellow × Oncidesa Sweet Sugar ‘Lemon Drop’ orchids in our Orchid House, a circular creation of rich red kalanchoe and bird’s nest ferns adorning our North Passage near the Bonsai Display, and a round living wreath focused on Echeveria in our Silver Garden. They are all stunning, and each using its own distinct plant palette, all spectacular … but I may be just a bit partial to the Silver Garden wreath, as I’m the one who crafted it! As a Longwood Senior Horticulturist, I’ve had the pleasure of creating dozens of living wreaths and many succulent creations throughout my time here, but this year’s Silver Garden wreath is especially poignant and beautiful to me. |

Program –
Living under the Tree Canopy by Debbie Hughes. Horticulture Director, Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Debbie will speak about the changes that occur under the tree canopy as the trees mature and the plants change their need for sunlight. Initially, young trees allow sunlight to penetrate the growth below the trees canopy. As the trees mature, the canopy thickens, and the sunlight falling on the undergrowth plants changes. This changes the needs of the plants living under the canopy.

Kathleen Hawryluk, a member of GCGC, is serving as President of CFAA (Creative Floral Arrangers of America) during this Pandemic. Because CFAA will not be having its usual February Seminar in Orlando, the CFAA Board has decided to keep in touch with members with a monthly Newsletter which will have a video included. Please go to www.Creativefloral.org for information on how to join and to see lots of other interesting info.
Kathleen accepted this challenge and has made a few videos that she will share with our club. Please note that she is the videographer, lighting person, director, producer, designer, critic and editor. Learning IMovie, which is the editing software, has been a definite challenge! You will see definite improvement of the quality of the videos as we see more of them.
Links to two of them are included here. Have more coming, Kathleen predicts they will be getting better as she learns more!
